Thyroid Ultrasound in Novi

A thyroid ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of your thyroid gland and is commonly used to diagnose thyroid nodules, goiters, and other thyroid disorders.

If you are a Novi resident and suffer from a thyroid condition, the team at Associated Endocrinologists can offer precision diagnostic imaging and medical advice on how to treat your thyroid issues.

Why Do I Need a Thyroid Ultrasound?

The thyroid is one of eight endocrine glands located throughout the body. It is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits at the base of the neck, just above the collarbone. It is responsible for producing thyroid hormone that regulates numerous biological functions, from heart rate to energy metabolism.

If nodules or rough patches develop on the thyroid, it can adversely impact your health. Unfortunately, many nodules cannot be seen or felt on the skin’s surface. A thyroid ultrasound is typically prescribed to:

  • Analyze whether a lump on the thyroid is benign or has features that suggest it may be cancerous and require a biopsy
  • Determine whether a lump in the neck is on the thyroid or an adjacent structure
  • Check for additional nodules, if a nodule has been felt during a physical exam
  • Measure the growth of a nodule over time

A thyroid ultrasound is also used as part of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment used to guide an electrode needle used to reduce thyroid nodules.

How to Prepare for a Thyroid Ultrasound

A thyroid ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure and requires little to no preparation beforehand. Wear loose, comfortable clothes and a top with a low neckline that won’t cover your neck above your collarbone. Avoid wearing jewelry, as you will be asked to remove it before the ultrasound begins.

What to Expect During a Thyroid Ultrasound

Before the ultrasound, your doctor will ask you to lie on the examination table and place a pillow behind your head for support. You will then be asked to lift your chin to expose your neck.

The doctor places a lubricating gel on your neck. This gel allows the transducer wand to glide smoothly across your skin’s surface and minimize sound wave interference from air and friction to ensure that they obtain the clearest images possible.

The doctor will move the transducer back and forth across the part of your neck where the thyroid is located. The doctor may need to make several passes to get an accurate image of your thyroid.

The doctor wipes away the gel, analyzes the images, and shares the results with you following the scan. The entire process takes approximately 10 minutes.
